Manufacturer regulations
The lifespan of a helmet is usually clearly specified by the manufacturer. Each type of helmet may have a different lifespan, depending on the materials and manufacturing technology. You should refer to the manufacturer's user manual to know the exact usage time for each type of helmet. Typically, manufacturers may specify that their helmets can be used for 3-5 years if no heavy impacts occur. After this period, the helmet needs to be replaced with a new one to ensure the highest level of protection. Because over time, the materials inside the helmet will gradually degrade and lose their elasticity.
Assessing the condition of the helmet
In addition to the manufacturer's regulations, assessing the condition of the helmet is also an important factor in determining its lifespan. Some signs that the helmet is no longer safe which you can easily observe with the naked eye include:
- Damaged helmet: If the helmet is broken, cracked, or has any other deformation, this can affect its protective ability.
- The helmet no longer fits properly: When a helmet has been used many times, it may lose its original fit. If the helmet does not hug the head and does not provide enough protection, it needs to be replaced.

- The helmet has experienced an impact: For any reason, if the helmet has experienced a strong impact or accident, even if there are no visible signs of damage, it should still be replaced. Because the shock absorption capabilities and the position of the foam padding are shifted, the load-bearing capacity of the helmet is reduced and it no longer provides maximum protection for the head area, therefore you need to replace it with a new helmet.
- The helmet strap is stretched or loose with signs of fraying/breaking: If the helmet strap does not snugly fit against the face when worn, it will cause the helmet to easily slide forward or backward, so if the helmet straps or cords are damaged or stretched, you need to replace it with another helmet.
Head size changes
If your head size has changed (for example, gaining weight, losing weight, or changing your hairstyle) and the helmet no longer fits snugly on your head as before, replace it with a new helmet that fits your current head size. A poorly fitting helmet will reduce its effectiveness in protecting your head and brain.
