Đồng Tháp
The province is named after the Đồng Tháp Mười plain. The origin of “Tháp Mười” (“ten towers”/“tenth tower”) is unresolved: hypotheses point to the ancient temple towers at Gò Tháp (archaeologist Lê Thị Liên suggests settlers named it after their number), a ten-storey tower, or the tenth watchtower of Thiên Hộ Dương’s insurgents.
According to researcher Nguyễn Hữu Hiếu, the name Đồng Tháp Mười is absent from the 1836 cadastral registers of Nam Kỳ; the French called the area “Plaine des Joncs” (plain of reeds).
