Đồng Nai
“Field of deer”: Đại Nam nhất thống chí reads Đồng Nai as a land of many deer; Chinese-character forms are Lộc Dã/Lộc Động, and the Lộc Dã market was commonly called Đồng Nai market.
Other hypotheses: a corruption of Nông Nại (Nông Nại Đại Phố, the Cù Lao Phố port), or the Mạ “Đạ Đờng”, a large river – i.e. a name predating Vietnamese settlement.
